Jump Start Your Move Back to Nursing!

The RN Refresher Program is a self-paced, online course designed to support nurses returning to clinical practice. Over a 16-week period, participants complete approximately 5–10 hours per week of coursework from the comfort of home—with the exception of the final in-person skills and simulation day.

This course is tailored for nurses who have been away from the hospital setting and may feel uncertain about re-engaging with IV therapy, medication systems, or today’s high-tech equipment. Our curriculum is designed to rebuild confidence and competence in medical-surgical nursing and reintroduce current standards in patient care.

The elements of our program that will develop confidence and competence for the returning nurse are:

-
Online Learning Modules Covering everything from basic skills to pharmacology, our interactive modules allow you to learn at your own pace. The faculty is available on an ongoing basis for guidance, assistance in course-related concerns, and to track records of assignment completion.

-
Hands-On Clinical Tools & Skills Practice Sessions You’ll complete a full day of in-person training at our state-of-the-art Simulation Center in Chico. Under the supervision of experienced nurse educators, you’ll practice essential clinical skills including IV insertion, wound care, NG tube placement, sterile technique, Foley catheterization, and dispensing medication.

-
Modern Technologies Many returning nurses are amazed by the capabilities of today’s human patient simulators, which offer realistic practice in a risk-free environment. Simulation scenarios allow for bedside care as you refine your clinical reasoning, and practice communication and working as a team - all in a safe, supportive space.

The Rural California Nursing Preceptorship (RCNP) Program is designed to give student nurses and graduate nurses (RNs) an opportunity to gain clinical experience in a rural or semi-rural setting. The opportunities are varied and encompass a large geographic area in Northern California. The placement period lasts a minimum of four weeks (150 hours). During this time, students work one-on-one with a preceptor, engaging in as much independent nursing practice as their skills permit.
